The gist in 30 seconds

  • Poland beat Nigeria's Flamingos 2-1 in Group B of the FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup in Rabat on Saturday, 17 October 2026.
  • Wiktoria Skrzypczak scored a 33rd-minute penalty and Natalia Skrok added a second in the 65th minute; FIFA credits substitute Oluebube Umejiaku with Nigeria's 79th-minute goal.
  • Nigeria face Puerto Rico on Tuesday, 20 October, and North Korea on Friday, 23 October; the top two in each group and the four best third-placed teams reach the round of 16.

Nigeria’s Flamingos lost 2-1 to Poland in their opening game at the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Rabat, Morocco, on Saturday, 17 October 2026. Wiktoria Skrzypczak scored a first-half penalty and Natalia Skrok added a second after the hour before substitute Oluebube Umejiaku pulled one back, according to FIFA’s official match record.

Why it matters

The result leaves Akeem Busari’s side third in Group B with no points, behind North Korea and Poland, who have three each, FIFA’s group table shows. North Korea, the two-time reigning champions, beat Puerto Rico 6-0 earlier on Saturday, FIFA reported.

The Flamingos are not out. The top two in each of the six groups and the four best third-placed teams reach the round of 16, so Nigeria’s last two group games, against Puerto Rico and North Korea, will decide whether they go through.

How the goals came

Poland went ahead in the 33rd minute. The referee awarded a penalty after a Video Support review of a challenge in the Nigerian area, Premium Times and THISDAY reported, and Skrzypczak scored from the spot. According to The Gazette, the foul was given against defender Ohunene Sunday after a rebound.

Poland had a goal ruled out for offside in the 63rd minute, Premium Times reported, but Skrok doubled the lead two minutes later.

Busari changed his attack in the 68th minute, sending on Umejiaku for captain Chidera Chidi and Awawu Bashiru for Mary Dunstan, FIFA’s line-ups show. Umejiaku scored from a 79th-minute free kick, according to FIFA. Some Nigerian reports credited the goal to Kanyinsola Yusuf, who had come on a minute earlier, but FIFA’s match record lists Umejiaku as the scorer.

Nigeria pushed for an equaliser and appealed for a penalty in the 86th minute after a challenge on Oluwakemi Adegbuyi, but the referee kept her original decision after another review, Premium Times reported.

What did Poland say?

“We controlled all of the match, so I’m very happy for the team and I hope the next will be so much better,” Skrzypczak told FIFA at full-time. “It was my dream to score a goal at the World Cup and I hope I can score more,” she said.

How do the two sides compare?

Poland, coached by Paulina Kawalec, are only at their second U-17 Women’s World Cup. On their debut, in the Dominican Republic in 2024, they reached the knockout stage before losing 1-0 to North Korea, FIFA said. North Korea are their next opponents.

The Flamingos’ best finish is third place, in 2022. At last year’s edition, also in Morocco, they reached the round of 16 and lost 4-0 to Italy, Blueprint has reported.

What do the Flamingos need now?

By GistMatrix’s count, a win over Puerto Rico on Tuesday would take Nigeria to three points before the final group game against North Korea. Because four of the six third-placed teams go through, goal difference could matter: Nigeria are on minus one after Saturday, and Puerto Rico are on minus six.

What happens next

  • Nigeria v Puerto Rico: Tuesday, 20 October, 7pm WAT, Mohammed VI Football Complex (Pitch 4), Rabat, according to FIFA.
  • Nigeria v North Korea: Friday, 23 October, 4pm WAT, Mohammed VI Football Complex (Pitch 1), according to FIFA.
  • Knockouts: the round of 16 follows the group stage, and the final is on Saturday, 7 November.
