  • The Federal Government proposed a harmonised 2027 examination timetable on Wednesday, 14 October 2026, after meeting the examination bodies in Abuja.
  • The UTME would hold from 15 to 25 March 2027, NECO's SSCE from 1 April to 14 May and WAEC's WASSCE from 11 May to 18 June.
  • Results for NECO, WAEC, NABTEB and NBAIS are targeted for August 2027, before tertiary admissions begin in September.

The Federal Government has proposed a harmonised 2027 examination timetable that would bring the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) forward to March and have WAEC, NECO and other school-leaving results out by August 2027.

The plan came out of a meeting between the Minister of State for Education, Professor Suwaiba Sa’id Ahmad, and heads and representatives of the examination bodies at the Federal Ministry of Education in Abuja, according to a statement issued on Wednesday, 14 October 2026, by the ministry’s Director of Press and Public Relations, Boriowo Folasade. The statement was published by the Federal Ministry of Information and National Orientation and reported by Vanguard and TVC News.

Why it matters

More than 1.3 million candidates sat NECO’s school certificate examination alone in 2026, according to Voice of Nigeria. When results arrive late, candidates can be held up in moving to universities, polytechnics and colleges of education, and the ministry says the new timetable is meant to stop that happening.

If adopted, the dates would apply to students now in their final year of secondary school and to anyone planning to sit the UTME next year.

What are the proposed dates?

  • JAMB UTME: 15 to 25 March 2027, with results expected in March.
  • NECO SSCE: 1 April to 14 May 2027.
  • WAEC WASSCE: 11 May to 18 June 2027.
  • NABTEB: 1 June to 5 July 2027.
  • NBAIS: 10 June to 9 July 2027.

Results for the NECO, WAEC, National Business and Technical Examinations Board (NABTEB) and National Board for Arabic and Islamic Studies (NBAIS) examinations are targeted for August 2027, so that eligible candidates can begin admission processes in September, according to the statement.

On the published dates, the NECO and WAEC windows overlap from 11 to 14 May. Candidates registering for both will need to check each body’s subject-by-subject timetable when it is released.

How is this different from 2026?

The biggest change is for NECO. Its 2026 Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) ran from 15 June to 23 July, and the results were announced on 24 September, 63 days after the last paper, Voice of Nigeria reported. Under the proposal, NECO would go first among the school-leaving examinations, starting on 1 April.

WAEC released its 2026 WASSCE results for school candidates on Wednesday, 5 August 2026, Nairametrics reported, within the window now proposed for 2027.

The UTME would also move earlier. The first batch of 2026 candidates sat the examination on Thursday, 16 April 2026, Leadership reported. The proposed 2027 window opens about a month earlier, on Monday, 15 March.

What does it mean for candidates?

Less time before the UTME. If the March window is confirmed, candidates have about five months from now to prepare. JAMB has already said the first session of the 2027 UTME will run from 8.30am to 10.30am, with candidates expected at their computer-based test (CBT) centres by 7.30am, Voice of Nigeria reported in September.

Earlier school-leaving examinations. With NECO starting in April and WAEC in May, schools and SS3 students will want to plan revision around the earlier dates.

Results in time for admission. The ministry’s aim is for results from all four school-leaving examinations to be out by August, before tertiary institutions begin admissions in September.

It is still a proposal. The ministry describes the dates as a proposed timetable. Each examination body publishes its own detailed timetable, and candidates should rely on those official releases.

Why is the government doing this?

According to Vanguard, the statement said the meeting focused on “harmonising examination schedules, preventing clashes among major examinations” and on making sure results are released within agreed timelines.

The ministry tied the plan to the reform agenda of the Minister of Education, Dr Maruf Tunji Alausa, under the Nigeria Education Sector Renewal Initiative (NESRI), and said it would keep engaging the examination bodies to make sure they keep to the timelines.

What happens next

Watch for WAEC, NECO, NABTEB, NBAIS and JAMB to publish their own detailed 2027 timetables, and for JAMB to announce registration dates for the 2027 UTME. Until then, the dates above remain the government’s proposal.
