Spotify has launched audiobooks in Nigeria. Listeners on its free and paid plans can now add 15 hours of audiobook listening a month for ₦2,300, the company said when the service went live on Wednesday, 14 October 2026.
Until now, Spotify offered audiobooks in only 22 markets. Nigeria is part of an expansion to more than 180 markets by the end of 2026, which Spotify announced at the Frankfurt Book Fair on 7 October.
Why does it matter to you?
For readers, it puts hundreds of thousands of books in an app many Nigerians already use for music and podcasts. For Nigerian writers, it opens a new place to sell their work: local publishers and self-published authors can now upload audiobooks through Spotify for Authors and reach listeners in more than 180 markets, according to Spotify.
How much does it cost?
- Audiobooks+: ₦2,300 a month for 15 hours of listening, available to both Spotify Free and Premium users.
- Top-up: another 10 hours for ₦2,700 if the monthly hours run out.
- Buy to keep: individual titles can also be bought outright; Spotify says prices vary by book and market.
A GistMatrix calculation shows the gap between the two: the monthly plan works out at about ₦153 an hour, while a top-up hour costs ₦270, about 76% more. Only time spent actively listening counts, and unused hours do not roll over to the next month.
In Nigeria, audiobooks are not included in a Premium subscription. Spotify says Audiobooks+ is the main way to listen in its markets across Africa, Asia and Argentina, while eligible Premium subscribers in some European and Latin American markets get 12 hours a month as part of their plan.
What can you listen to?
Spotify says listeners in its new markets get access to more than 350,000 titles in more than 120 languages. It has not said how many are by Nigerian authors, and says it expects the local catalogue to grow as more publishers and authors join.
Features include offline downloads, a sleep timer, listening progress that syncs across devices, and Page Match, which lets readers scan a printed book’s ISBN barcode and pick up at the same point in the audio version. Spotify says more than one million readers have used Page Match since February.
What does it mean for Nigerian authors?
Nigeria is on Spotify’s list of markets where Spotify for Authors is available. Spotify says all its audiobook partnerships are non-exclusive, so writers can still sell through other platforms. It did not disclose revenue-sharing terms for Nigerian authors and publishers, Premium Times reported.
“Books change how we see the world, and the people in it,” said Owen Smith, Spotify’s Vice-President of Audiobooks.
Spotify says Audiobooks+ has passed one million subscribers worldwide since it launched just over a year ago, and that monthly audiobook listeners grew by nearly 40% over the past year.
What happens next
Spotify plans to complete the rollout to more than 180 markets by the end of 2026. Nigerian writers and publishers who want their books on the platform can sign up through Spotify for Authors.
