The gist in 30 seconds

  • Avengers: Endgame Encore took an estimated $26m from 3,060 cinemas
  • The re-release adds two to eight minutes of new footage teasing Avengers: Doomsday
  • Resident Evil passed $100m; Heart of the Beast and Primetime opened strongly

Who needs a brand-new film when you have Thanos? Seven years after it first stormed cinemas, Avengers: Endgame is back at number one in North America.

Disney and Marvel Studios’ re-release, Avengers: Endgame Encore, made an estimated $26 million over the weekend of 25 to 27 September from 3,060 locations, according to Boxoffice Pro and The Numbers. The film’s lifetime domestic total now stands at about $884 million.

What is new in the Encore

This is not a straight replay. Depending on the screen, audiences get between two and eight minutes of new material that teases the next big crossover, Avengers: Doomsday, due in cinemas on 18 December. In other words, Marvel is using a much-loved hit to warm fans up for December.

The rest of the top five

  • Resident Evil (Sony) slipped to second in its second weekend but has passed $100 million at the domestic box office, with Boxoffice Pro putting its total at $103.47 million.
  • Heart of the Beast (Paramount), a survival drama starring Brad Pitt and directed by David Ayer, opened third with an estimated $20 million.
  • Primetime (A24), with Robert Pattinson playing To Catch a Predator host Chris Hansen, opened fourth with just over $19 million, an impressive start for the indie studio.
  • Forgotten Island, from DreamWorks Animation, opened fifth with $12.8 million, a soft start by the studio’s standards despite a warm reception.

The bigger story is how studios are learning to squeeze fresh money from old favourites. A re-release with a few extra minutes, sold as an event, managed to beat three brand-new wide releases in the same weekend. Expect other franchises to take notes.

For Nigerian Marvel fans, the date to circle is 18 December. We could not confirm whether the Encore cut will screen in Nigerian cinemas, so keep an eye on local listings.

What next: Avengers: Doomsday opens on 18 December.
