The sequel to the 1987 NBC sitcom only arrived on Thursday, 24 September, so its count covers Thursday to Sunday. Netflix put the viewing at 23 million hours. Nigerian viewers have an extra reason to press play: Nollywood veteran Richard Mofe-Damijo, known as RMD, turns up in episode 7.
At home, the show has gone further. An American campus comedy is top of Nigerian screens this week, with a familiar Nollywood face in the middle of it.
How did A Different World do on the Netflix Top 10?
A Different World debuted at No 4 on Netflix’s English TV list with 4.2 million views, Netflix said on 29 September. Netflix works out views by dividing total hours watched by a title’s running time.
Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story kept the top spot for a second week with 14.5 million views. Wonka’s The Golden Ticket (4.6 million) and Crew Girl (4.5 million) came next, and The Gentlemen season 2 matched the Hillman sequel’s 4.2 million one place lower. A Different World got there with only four days on the platform.
Who does RMD play in A Different World?
RMD plays Mr Chukwu, a father who visits Hillman College with his Ghanaian wife to see their son Kojo, played by Chibuikem Uche, in episode 7, according to a Premium Times review published on Saturday, 26 September. The visit turns awkward quickly: the parents discover Kojo has not been honest with them about what he is studying.
The appearance is short. Premium Times’ reviewer still judged that RMD made the biggest impression in the episode. The actor, known to Nigerian audiences for the 1980s soap Ripples and the drama Castle & Castle, is also in the cast of the coming Children of Blood and Bone film, QED.NG reported on 25 September.
What is the new A Different World about?
The 10-episode series follows Deborah Wayne, played by Maleah Joi Moon, the youngest child of Dwayne Wayne and Whitley Gilbert, through her first year at the fictional Hillman College. Kadeem Hardison and Jasmine Guy return as her parents, with Cree Summer and Dawnn Lewis also back from the original cast. Felicia Pride is the showrunner.
The original A Different World ran on NBC from 1987 to 1993 as a spin-off of The Cosby Show. The revival has picked up Dwayne and Whitley’s story 33 years after the last episode aired.
What happens next
Netflix publishes its next Top 10, covering 28 September to 4 October, on Tuesday, 6 October. That will be the first chart to count a full week of A Different World. All 10 episodes are streaming on Netflix in Nigeria now, and RMD’s scene is in episode 7.
