Nollywood has a new world record. Black Market, the crime thriller directed by Fatimah Binta Gimsay, drew 51,000 viewers to a single screening at Tafawa Balewa Square in Lagos on Saturday, 26 September, setting the Guinness World Record for the largest audience at a film screening in one location.
That 51,000 is the figure Guinness World Records verified, and it only counted people who stayed from the start of the film to the end. The actual crowd was bigger: Lagos Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat put total attendance at about 64,000. Either way, the old mark has gone. It stood at 43,624, set at a screening of the Filipino film Felix Manalo at the Philippine Arena in 2015. The filmmakers summed up the mood simply: “We just made history!”
What the film is about
Written by Gimsay and Abdul Tijani-Ahmed and shot in Abeokuta, Ogun State, Black Market follows five market women who build a cross-border smuggling network to survive fuel scarcity and economic hardship. Their operation is thrown into chaos when a rival kidnaps one of their daughters.
The ensemble cast includes Linda Ejiofor-Suleiman, Lateef Adedimeji, Omowunmi Dada, Scarlet Gomez, Teniola Aladese, Susan Pwajok, Ibrahim Yekini and Uzor Arukwe. Rixel Studios, FilmOne Studios and Signet Ring Studios are behind the production, with Nora Awolowo among the producers and Switch Visuals delivering the event itself.
The timing was neat, too. Saturday was also Nigeria Cinema Day, when the Cinema Exhibitors Association of Nigeria (CEAN) set a flat ₦3,000 ticket price at participating cinemas across the country. That is three times the ₦1,000 charged at the first edition in 2023, a reminder of how much the cost of a night at the movies has climbed.
For an industry that usually measures success in naira, this is a different kind of milestone: proof that Nigerians will turn up in huge numbers to watch a homegrown story together.
What next: None of the reports we checked gave a date for a nationwide cinema run, so watch for announcements from FilmOne, one of the companies behind the film, on when Black Market reaches a screen near you.
