Jackie Chan has survived six decades of his own stunts. On Tuesday, 29 September, he also had to survive the internet: a black-and-white graphic bearing his name and the dates “1954–2026” spread across social media, but there is no credible evidence that the 72-year-old has died.
The fake memorial travelled fast. One post had more than 3.8 million views within five hours, Gulf News reported, and some users shared tributes before the claim was debunked, according to Firstpost.
So GistMatrix checked who, if anyone, has confirmed it, where the claim came from and when Jackie Chan was last seen. If the post has reached your WhatsApp or X timeline, here is the real gist.
Is Jackie Chan dead?
No. Jackie Chan’s family, representatives and official social media accounts have made no announcement of his death, and no credible outlet has reported one, Khaleej Times reported on Tuesday morning. GistMatrix found nothing to the contrary as of 2:30pm WAT. Fact-checks by Gulf News and Firstpost reached the same conclusion: the actor, whose real name is Fang Shilong, is alive.
Where did the Jackie Chan death hoax come from?
The claim rests on a single memorial-style image with no source attached. There is no statement, no named outlet and no detail of when, where or how he supposedly died. Gulf News noted that hoaxes like this spread quickest when a realistic tribute graphic is shared without a credible source.
Chan has been here before. In 2011, a false heart attack rumour spread so widely that his team used his official Facebook page to confirm he was “alive and well”, and another hoax surfaced in 2022, Khaleej Times reported.
When was Jackie Chan last seen?
Jackie Chan’s most recent widely reported public appearance was on 7 July 2026, when he visited Pei Chun Public School in Singapore at an event organised by the Lim Family Foundation. He met more than 900 students and sang his song “Hard to Say Goodbye”, Gulf News reported, citing The Straits Times.
He has kept working since. In August, he was in Baku, Azerbaijan, filming Armour of God: Ultimatum, the fourth film in the series, News.az reported. Earlier in the year, he attended the Cannes Film Festival, according to Khaleej Times.
What happens next
GistMatrix will update this article if Jackie Chan or his team respond to the hoax. Until then, treat any post announcing his death as false unless it comes from his family, his representatives or a credible news outlet with a named source.
Three quick checks before you share any celebrity death post: has the family or management said it, has a major news outlet reported it, and does the post name any source at all?
