Updated 11:30 WAT, 15 October 2026: Avila has asked a Los Angeles judge to issue an arrest warrant for Brown, alleging he has failed to provide dates to appear with his bank records so his finances can be examined, according to court documents reported by TMZ on 12 October.
Chris Brown’s former housekeeper Maria Avila has agreed to take $9.5 million over the 2020 dog attack at the singer’s Los Angeles home. That means giving up $3.4 million of her jury award to avoid a second trial. Her lawyer filed the acceptance on Thursday, 1 October, Rolling Stone reported.
A Los Angeles jury had awarded her $12.9 million. Judge Huey Cotton called that figure “excessive” in a conditional order on Tuesday, 29 September, and gave her a choice: take $9.5 million, or go through a fresh trial on damages alone.
She took the money. Brown’s lawyers did not answer Rolling Stone’s request for comment, and as of 7:35am WAT on Friday, 2 October, the singer had said nothing publicly about it.
What happened in the Chris Brown dog attack?
A large security dog named Hades attacked Avila outside Brown’s home in Tarzana, in the San Fernando Valley, on 12 December 2020, according to trial evidence reported by Rolling Stone. She told jurors she had gone outside to empty a vacuum bag when the dog, a Caucasian Shepherd, went for her without warning.
She described severe injuries to her left arm and face, heavy scarring and post-traumatic stress disorder. “I will never be the same again,” she told the court through a Spanish interpreter.
Brown, 37, testified that he locked the dog up and told her help was on the way. He admitted he did not call 911 himself and that he left before paramedics arrived. Before the trial, he admitted negligence under California’s dog-bite law but disputed how badly she was hurt and argued she was partly to blame. The jury did not accept that.
How did the case get here?
12 December 2020: Hades attacks Avila at Brown’s Tarzana home.
June 2026: A two-week trial opens in the Van Nuys courthouse, and both Brown and Avila give evidence.
2 July 2026: theGrio reports the verdict. Avila gets $12.9 million, her sister Patricia Avila $885,000 and her husband Oscar Olivo $50,000, about $13.8 million in all. Brown’s company, Black Pyramid LLC, is also found liable.
Week of 21 September 2026: At a hearing, Avila’s lawyer Nancy Doumanian argues that a radial nerve injury has left her client struggling to grip, write, type and dress, and urges the judge to cut the award only as far as $11 million.
29 September 2026: Judge Cotton’s conditional order sets the $9.5 million figure.
1 October 2026: Avila “unequivocally accepts” the reduction, according to the notice Doumanian filed.
Why did the judge cut the award?
Judge Cotton ruled that the evidence did not support $12.9 million, Rolling Stone and Cover Media reported. US judges can trim a jury award this way: the winning side either accepts a lower sum or the damages are tried again from scratch.
The cut works out at about 26 per cent of what the jury gave her, and it is $1.5 million below the $11 million her own lawyer had proposed. A retrial would have brought more cost and no guarantee of a better result. Doumanian had not explained the decision when Rolling Stone asked, and the reports so far do not say whether the smaller awards to her sister and husband have changed.
Why are Nigerian fans following the Chris Brown case?
Brown has a big following in Nigeria and has recorded with Nigerian stars, including Davido on Blow My Mind in 2019, ThisDay reported at the time. Nigerian outlets, PM News among them, carried the reduced award on Friday morning.
What happens next
The $9.5 million figure replaces the jury’s $12.9 million award for Avila, so the damages retrial will not go ahead. Avila has since asked a Los Angeles judge to issue an arrest warrant for Brown over the examination of his finances, TMZ and Complex reported; no ruling or hearing date had been reported as of 15 October 2026. Brown’s representatives had not commented publicly on the filing, and no appeal against the reduced judgment had been reported.
