Five Nollywood stars, one airport and a Ghanaian director with big plans. Destiny Etiko, Patience Ozokwor and three other Nigerian actors landed in Accra on Wednesday, 30 September, to shoot A Journey to Africa, the new movie from Ghanaian actor and filmmaker Kwadwo Nkansah, known as Lil Win, Ghana’s state broadcaster GBC reported.

GBC named the arrivals as Kanayo O. Kanayo, Patience Ozokwor, Mike Ezuruonye, Zubby Michael and Destiny Etiko, and said Lil Win and his Wezzy Empire team met them. Yen.com.gh reported that the group came in through Kotoka International Airport, and clips of the arrival were all over Ghanaian Instagram and TikTok by Wednesday morning.

Destiny Etiko confirmed the trip on her own page. Over a video of her luggage, she greeted Ghana and wrote: “Let’s make a good movie.”

Who is in Lil Win’s A Journey to Africa?

Five Nigerian actors have been named so far: Kanayo O. Kanayo, Patience Ozokwor, Mike Ezuruonye, Zubby Michael and Destiny Etiko, according to GBC. Yen.com.gh said more cast members are involved but did not name them. Lil Win is making the film under his Wezzy Empire banner, and Yen called it his second international project.

The line-up spans the generations. Kanayo O. Kanayo and Patience Ozokwor, the Mama G of a thousand home videos, go back to Nollywood’s VHS days, while Zubby Michael and Destiny Etiko bring the kind of social media numbers producers now chase. Etiko alone has 6.7 million Instagram followers.

What did the stars and Lil Win post?

Destiny Etiko’s reel is the clearest confirmation from the cast. When GistMatrix checked her verified Instagram account, @destinyetikoofficial, at about 4:30pm WAT on Wednesday, 30 September, the post had been up for about three hours, which puts it at around 1:30pm WAT.

Lil Win’s own Instagram account, @officiallilwin, which has 3.6 million followers, had not posted about the arrivals at the same check; its newest post was dated Tuesday, 29 September. He did speak on video, though. Pulse Ghana reported at 1:35pm GMT (2:35pm WAT) that, while welcoming the Nigerian actors, he said “it is only in Ghana that professional actors are being compared to YouTubers”, arguing that trained actors are the ones who can carry Ghanaian culture abroad.

What is Nzulezu, where the movie is set?

Nzulezu is a village built on stilts over Lake Tadane, near Beyin in the Jomoro District of Ghana’s Western Region, about 90km west of Takoradi. UNESCO put it on its World Heritage tentative list on 17 January 2000, and more than 500 people live there. GBC reported that the story centres on the village, which is why the film is also billed as A Journey to Africa (Nzulezu).

For Nigerian viewers, that means a Nollywood cast working on water rather than in the usual Lagos and Asaba locations, with Ghanaian Kumawood crew behind the camera.

How did we get here?

About 1:30pm WAT: Destiny Etiko posted her greeting to Ghana on Instagram.
2:35pm WAT: Pulse Ghana carried Lil Win’s welcome video and his remarks about actors and YouTubers.

What happens next

Filming in Ghana comes next. As of 4:27pm WAT on Wednesday, 30 September, Lil Win had not announced a shooting schedule, a release date or where Nigerians will be able to watch A Journey to Africa, so Nigerian availability is not confirmed.
