Carter Efe has beaten Speed Darlington. The comedian kept his celebrity boxing belt with a unanimous decision after four rounds at Chaos in the Ring in Lagos on Thursday night, 1 October 2026, TVC News reported, and the promoters, Balmoral Group Promotions, named him the winner on Instagram.

The loss leaves a hole in the rapper’s plan. Before the fight, Darlington Okoye, known as Speed Darlington, said he wanted Grammy-winning singer Burna Boy in a boxing ring next and that the two would stay “enemies for life”, P.M. News reported on Monday, 28 September.

He made the comments in an interview with Nevo Media. A fight with Burna Boy would be the high point of his year, he said, because of what happened in 2024: “He had me locked up.”

It was not the first time that week he had said it. So how did a row over online comments end in a police cell, and is a Burna Boy fight still on the cards after Thursday night?

What did Speed Darlington say about Burna Boy?

Speed Darlington said he plans to face Burna Boy after his fight with comedian Carter Efe, so he can take out all his anger on him, according to P.M. News. He added that he cannot forgive the singer and that a fight would not end the feud.

In an earlier interview with Yanga FM Lagos, reported by Modern Ghana on Saturday, 26 September, he said he had no relationship with Burna Boy and would go for him if they were ever in the same room. He also said he hoped Burna Boy would be his next opponent if he beats Carter Efe.

Why is Speed Darlington angry with Burna Boy?

The grudge goes back to October 2024, when Speed Darlington spent five days in police custody after Burna Boy filed a complaint accusing him of making false and damaging statements, The Guardian Nigeria reported. The complaint followed comments the rapper had made online about Burna Boy’s Grammy win. He was released on bail on 9 October 2024.

The row did not end there. He was arrested again in November 2024, and his lawyers went to the Federal High Court in Abuja with a N300 million suit against the Inspector-General of Police over what they called unlawful detention, Premium Times reported in January 2025. Modern Ghana reported on 26 September that the case is still pending in court.

What happened at Chaos in the Ring?

The fights went ahead on Thursday night, 1 October 2026, Independence Day, at Balmoral Hall, Federal Palace Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos, live on SuperSport and DAZN. Speed Darlington and Carter Efe headlined the celebrity side of the card.

Former BBNaija winner Josephina Otabor, known as Phyna, knocked out Nollywood actress Nkechi Blessing Sunday in the fourth round, in the early hours of Friday, 2 October, The Guardian Nigeria reported. Phyna said afterwards that she had planned to play with her opponent for three rounds before getting serious in the fourth. She left with a car and a ceremonial cheque for ₦50 million, and the promoters posted on Instagram that she “got the car and the money”.

She was not done. In the ring, Phyna called out actress Etinosa Idemudia, saying Etinosa had been sending her direct messages, and Etinosa walked on stage and accepted the challenge, according to The Guardian Nigeria. It closes one feud that ran from Instagram to a TV studio and a press conference, where Phyna and Nkechi Blessing threw an egg and a water bottle at each other, and opens another.

In the professional title fight, Ghana’s Seth “Freezy Macbones” Gyimah beat Nigeria’s Godday Appah for the WBO African light heavyweight continental title. “Ghana wins it,” the promoters wrote on Instagram.

In the main celebrity bout, Carter Efe beat Speed Darlington by unanimous decision after four rounds, TVC News reported at about 1:36am WAT on Friday, 2 October. When GistMatrix checked Balmoral Group Promotions’ Instagram page at about 2:30am WAT, it carried a “Winner!” graphic for Carter, posted next to the ones for Phyna and Gyimah.

It is Efe’s second win on the promoters’ celebrity cards. In May he outpointed singer Habeeb Okikiola, known as Portable, at the same venue, Channels TV reported. After Thursday’s fight he told TVC News he wanted to fight “men, like Mayweather”, and said he plans to marry his girlfriend, Taylor Jasmine, before his next bout. In the ring he asked for “an international opponent”, naming American rapper DDG and Floyd Mayweather, and said he had not trained for the bout, The Guardian Nigeria reported. As of 4:10am WAT, Speed Darlington had not commented on the result in any report GistMatrix reviewed.

What happened at the Chaos in the Ring press conference?

The build-up ended with a small fire. At the event’s press conference at the Balmoral Convention Centre, Sheraton, Ikeja, fireworks set off by Carter Efe’s team set part of the hall alight, and staff put it out with fire extinguishers, Premium Times and The Guardian Nigeria reported on Wednesday, 30 September. No injuries were reported.

Before that, a birthday cake brought out for Carter Efe was kicked over; The Guardian Nigeria said Speed Darlington kicked it. Carter Efe mocked his opponent for failing to beat Portable, whom Efe outpointed at the same venue in May. Speed Darlington answered by pointing at the comedian’s championship belt: “Your belt is mine.” At the same event, Phyna threw an egg at Nkechi Blessing, who threw a water bottle back, according to ThisDay.

Promoter Ezekiel Adamu told ThisDay the organisers had not expected things to go that far and would take more precautions from now on.

Has Burna Boy responded?

No. As of 4:10am WAT on Friday, 2 October, Burna Boy and his team had not publicly responded to Speed Darlington’s comments in any of the reports GistMatrix reviewed, including coverage of the press conference and fight night. No promoter has announced a bout between the two.

What happens next

Speed Darlington’s first public words on the defeat are the next thing to watch for, including whether he still wants Burna Boy. No Burna Boy bout has been announced. Carter Efe says his wedding to Taylor Jasmine comes before his next fight, and he wants DDG or Mayweather. Phyna v Etinosa Idemudia has been agreed on stage, but as of 4:10am WAT on Friday, 2 October, Balmoral Group Promotions had not announced a date or venue.
