X-Files reboot: Hulu orders Ryan Coogler series with Deadwyler, Patel

Hulu has ordered Ryan Coogler’s X-Files reboot to series, the streamer announced on Tuesday, 13 October, with Danielle Deadwyler and Himesh Patel as the new pair of FBI agents chasing the unexplained.

Coogler, the director of Black Panther and Sinners, wrote and directed the pilot himself. He shot it with Autumn Durald Arkapaw, his Oscar-winning Sinners cinematographer, and Ludwig Göransson wrote the score, according to TheWrap and Give Me My Remote.

The order comes about eight months after Hulu green-lit the pilot in February. What Hulu has not given yet is a premiere date or an episode count.

What is the new X-Files reboot about?

The X-Files reboot follows two highly decorated FBI agents who have very little in common. They are handed a long-shuttered division that deals with cases of unexplained phenomena, and form an unlikely bond, according to the official logline Hulu released.

Deadwyler, best known for Till, and Patel, the British star of Yesterday and Station Eleven, are also co-executive producers. Jennifer Yale is the showrunner. Chris Carter, who created the original show, is an executive producer alongside Coogler, Zinzi Coogler and Sev Ohanian of Proximity Media. The series comes from Onyx Collective and 20th Television.

“What Chris Carter created is special,” Coogler said in the announcement, adding that the team wanted to honour the original while finding their own way into it.

How did we get here?

The X-Files has had several lives. GistMatrix traced them through TheWrap’s history of the show and this year’s reports:

• 1993 to 2002: the original runs on Fox, with David Duchovny as Fox Mulder and Gillian Anderson as Dana Scully.
• 1998 and 2008: two cinema films, Fight the Future and I Want to Believe.
• 2016 and 2018: two revival seasons bring Duchovny and Anderson back.
• February 2026: Hulu orders Coogler’s pilot, with Deadwyler set to star, TVLine and TheWrap report.
• Tuesday, 13 October 2026: Hulu picks the show up to series.

Duchovny and Anderson have not confirmed any part in the new version, Bloody Disgusting reported, though both have spoken warmly about it.

What is the Nigerian link to Ryan Coogler’s team?

Nigerian music fans already know this team’s work. Coogler and Göransson wrote “Lift Me Up” from Black Panther: Wakanda Forever with Tems and Rihanna, and the song earned Tems an Oscar nomination in 2023. Tems also recorded “No Woman, No Cry” for the same soundtrack.

Can you watch the X-Files reboot in Nigeria?

Not easily, as of 6pm WAT on Tuesday, 13 October. Hulu does not operate in Nigeria. Outside the US, Disney usually puts Hulu originals on Disney+, but when GistMatrix tried to open Disney+ from Lagos at about 2:30pm WAT the same day, the site said it was not available in the region. Disney has not said where the new X-Files will stream outside the US.

The next announcements to watch for are the premiere date and the rest of the cast. Hulu had not announced a premiere date, an episode count or the rest of the cast as of 6pm WAT on 13 October.
