The gist in 30 seconds

  • Nigeria beat Togo 4-0 in Sunday's final in Yamoussoukro, Côte d'Ivoire
  • Five wins from five, with 17 goals scored and only two conceded
  • Next up: the FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup in Morocco, starting next month

Nigeria’s Flamingos are champions of West Africa’s WAFU B zone. The country’s U-17 women’s team beat Togo 4-0 in the final of the WAFU B U-17 Girls Cup in Yamoussoukro, Côte d’Ivoire, on Sunday 27 September, finishing the tournament with a perfect record.

Captain Harmony Chidi set the tone with two first-half penalties, before Oluebube Umejiaku added a third in the 67th minute and Oluwakemi Adegbuyi wrapped things up in the 90th.

A perfect run

The Flamingos won all five of their matches, scoring 17 goals and conceding just two. Before the final, they beat:

  • Niger 5-0
  • Ghana 4-2
  • Burkina Faso 2-0
  • Hosts Côte d’Ivoire 2-0

Beating Ghana and the hosts on the way to the title says a lot about this group’s composure. Winning away from home, in front of rival crowds, is exactly the kind of test young players need before a world stage.

Eyes on Morocco

The title is a strong warm-up for bigger things. The Flamingos are preparing for the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco, which starts next month, and they have pedigree at that level: Nigeria won bronze at the 2022 edition.

Emmanuel Ikpeme, the Nigeria Football Federation’s acting general secretary, backed the squad publicly. “I have confidence in the team to go to Morocco and achieve great things,” he said.

For a country that loves its Super Falcons, this is a chance to meet the next generation early. Many senior internationals came through youth sides like this one, so a few names on this team sheet could be household names within a few years. Keep an eye on the scorers from Sunday’s final.

What next: The Flamingos move into final preparations for the U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco next month.
