The story of Ronaldo and Nigerian players has found a second life this week. A friendly played in June is trending again, and the reason has little to do with the football itself.

Fans on social media have resurfaced videos and photographs of how Cristiano Ronaldo behaved after Portugal beat Nigeria 2-1 in Leiria. They are placing those scenes beside the controversy that followed Lionel Messi’s farewell match for Argentina against Benin. The comparison has set timelines alight, and it deserves a closer look than a viral clip allows.

What happened in Leiria

Portugal met the Super Eagles on Wednesday 10 June 2026 at the Estádio Dr. Magalhães Pessoa in Leiria. It was the hosts’ final warm-up before the World Cup, and Nigeria, who had missed out on the tournament after losing a playoff to DR Congo, arrived with nothing to lose.

Pedro Neto put Portugal ahead in the 23rd minute. Akor Adams levelled for Nigeria before the break. Francisco Conceição, off the bench, struck the winner in the 75th minute.

Ronaldo, then 41, started the match and was substituted in the 65th minute for Gonçalo Ramos. He did not score. According to the Associated Press, he missed clear chances with only the goalkeeper to beat, in both halves. The night also belonged to Alex Iwobi, who was honoured for winning his 100th cap for Nigeria.

The shirt swap that stole the night

It was after the final whistle that the real gist began.

The standout moment belonged to left-back Bruno Onyemaechi. The Olympiacos defender, who started the match and previously played in Portugal for Feirense, swapped shirts with Ronaldo, Soccernet reported.

Ronaldo then did something fans noticed immediately. The first image on his Instagram post after the match showed him alongside Onyemaechi. For a defender who had spent the evening trying to stop him, it was a public acknowledgement most players would treasure.

Why the Messi comparison is trending

The renewed attention follows Messi’s final appearance for Argentina on Tuesday 6 October 2026. Argentina beat Benin 3-0 at the Monumental in Buenos Aires in front of 85,000 supporters, and Messi scored once and set up two more.

After the final whistle, footage showed a Benin player repeatedly asking Messi for a selfie, and Messi moving him away. Some fans called it a lack of humility. A few went further and accused Messi of racism, an allegation that others rejected as unfair.

The clip alone does not settle the argument. Goal.com said Messi showed Benin’s players “nothing but respect” during the match, and noted that he had embraced and shaken hands with them when play paused in the tenth minute to applaud him.

The more substantial complaint came from the Benin camp. Coach Gernot Rohr told French radio station RMC that his players had hoped to swap shirts and take pictures with Messi and his teammates. According to Rohr, security stopped them from reaching the tunnel or the dressing room. Reports ahead of the match had also questioned how Benin were treated, including the absence of a charter flight to Argentina.

Fairness matters in a fan war

It would be easy to turn this into another round of the Ronaldo versus Messi debate, and many fans already have. But the two situations are not identical.

Ronaldo’s moment was a relaxed post-match scene in a friendly, in which the opposing players approached him and he gave them time. Messi’s came at the end of an emotional, tightly choreographed farewell, where security and ceremony appear to have shaped much of what Benin’s players could and could not do. Blaming one man for a stadium’s arrangements is a stretch.

Still, perception counts for a lot in modern football. For many Nigerian supporters, the lasting image is of a global icon treating their players as equals rather than as an obstacle to his own big night.

What it means for the Super Eagles

For Nigeria, the lesson goes beyond souvenirs. A narrow defeat by a side preparing for the World Cup showed the value of fixtures against elite opposition, and that is the kind of game the Super Eagles will need as they rebuild after missing the tournament.

The story of Ronaldo and Nigerian players may have started with a shirt, but it has grown into a wider conversation about respect, access and how football’s biggest names treat the people they share a pitch with. In Leiria, at least, the fans believe Ronaldo got it right.
